ZWO AM7 Review (mount): a new standard for mid-weight imaging

Welcome to the review of the ZWO AM7 mount, a harmonic equatorial mount. I purchased my mount from High Point Scientific, my main supplier of mounts, telescopes, and other astrophotography gear since 2022.

After spending time in the field with the ZWO AM7, I can confidently say this mount represents a significant leap forward for astrophotographers who have pushed the limits of strain wave mounts. I was certainly one of those, pushing my AM5 to hold a massive Celestron EdgeHD 9.25" SCT telescope with accessories. I often encountered tracking inconsistencies, even when balancing with a counterweight. The motor also seemed to be strained often, not returning to the full home position and sometimes refusing to move. While the AM5 is portable and capable, it sometimes felt like it was operating at the edge of its performance envelope with heavier rigs. After it appeared to give up the ghost, instead of investing time, money, and cycles tryting to repair it, I decided to upgrade.


The AM7 is an entirely different experience!


Effortless Handling of Larger Payloads

One of the most impressive aspects of the AM7 is how comfortably it handles my Celestron EdgeHD 9.25. This is not a lightweight optical tube by any measure (21 pounds without accessories), yet the mount carries it with ease and without the need for a counterweight.

This transforms the setup process. With fewer components and no need to fuss with balance, getting up and running in the field is faster and more intuitive. More importantly, the mount feels stable and confident under load, which translates directly into better imaging performance.


Excellent Native Tracking

The standout performance metric for me was unguided tracking.


After achieving a solid polar alignment, I was able to capture 3-minute unguided exposures for a Rho Ophiuchi widefield composition. That level of tracking accuracy is remarkable, especially with a setup of this size and without guiding corrections.

Stars remained tight and well-controlled, indicating not only smooth tracking but consistent periodic error management. For astrophotographers who value simplicity or want to reduce reliance on guiding systems, this is a major advantage.


Real-World Reliability

In practical use, the AM7 simply inspires confidence. The mount behaves predictably, tracks smoothly, and doesn’t require constant adjustment or troubleshooting. Compared to my experience with the AM5, the difference isn’t subtle but it’s immediately noticeable.


I had the mount up and running at my off-grid observatory within minutes and used the controller to quickly and easily slew to the planet Venus. Turning on tracking is as simple as hitting the "T" on the controller and when it's red, the planet stayed steady in my target field of view. If you've done lucky imaging before, you know how much that can improve the final image!


Best Guiding Ever

Numbers don't lie! I am usually happy to have a RMS error of about 0.9 - 1.0 arc seconds. I consider that to be a good night. With the AM7 mount, I am consistently seeing an RMS error of just 0.4 - 0.5 arc seconds! This is a game changer for gathering good, quality images to stack and produce the final image. This is consistent even at a higher focal length using a secondary guider, and I do not use an off-axis guider.


Final Thoughts

The ZWO AM7 feels like the mount the AM5 was leading toward: more robust, more stable, and capable of handling demanding optical setups without compromise. It will comfortably handle all of my rigs without a counterweight.


If you’re working with heavier instruments like the EdgeHD 9.25 and want the freedom of counterweight-free operation, without sacrificing tracking performance, the AM7 delivers in a big way.
