"Nebulous Neighbor" signature series limited edition
Nebulous neighbor reveals the Andromeda Galaxy, 31st in Charles Messier's catalog of "not-a-comet" deep sky objects, is the most distant object visible to the unaided human eye. Scientists believe its light travelled for 2.5 million light years to reach us. Originally named the "Andromeda Nebula" before more powerful telescopes could resolve sharper details, in its vast spiral are hundreds of billions, and perhaps more than a trillion, stars. Seen through the lens of modern astrophotography, delicate dust lanes, glowing star clouds, and companion galaxies emerge from the darkness, offering a rare glimpse beyond the boundaries of the Milky Way and into the scale of the universe itself.
Behind the scenes, I dedicated three nights to capturing the data for the image. The first night I had issues with my setup. The second night I alternated between 30-second and 3-minute exposures, then based on the results went with 30-second exposures. My tracking software claimed 1.5 terabytes of disk space and ran for over 12 hours to reconcile all of the images. The result represents a total exposure of 8 hours using a ZWO ASI294MC camera with a Redcat 71 telescope and no filter. Dithering and stacking allowed me to render this in 61 megapixels, making it very high resolution and suitable for large prints.
This limited edition run celebrates my most technical and detailed rendering of M31: the Andromeda Galaxy, ever. Printed on vivid, high-definition ChromaLuxe, this is a piece that provokes thought, evokes awe, and is easily recognized by non-astronomers.
