Technically speaking, the image represents 3 hours of exposures taken with specialized filters that capture both broadband (the colors we naturally see) and narrowband (areas of the spectrum that are signatures of radiation emitted by the distant nebulae). Instead of blending the broadband and narrowband data as is fairly common in astrophotography, this image represents pure broadband or visible colors in the upper left and pure narrowband and emission colors mapped using a "Hubble" palette in the lower right. The transition is both subtle and fluid.
